Ulster Rugby has significantly bolstered its roster by securing Australian prop Angus Bell on a short-term deal, bringing him in from the NSW Waratahs. The 24-year-old loose-head prop will join the Irish province on a sabbatical starting in December, continuing until the end of the 2025-26 season.
Before his transition, Bell is set to play a pivotal role for the Wallabies under coach Joe Schmidt in the upcoming Test series against the British and Irish Lions in Australia. Having earned 36 caps since his debut in 2020, he is expected to be a key contributor, especially after his recent performances in November Tests against prominent teams like England, Wales, and Scotland, although he missed the chance to face Ireland due to illness.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the move, Bell stated he is excited to experience rugby in a different hemisphere and develop his game in a new environment. Conversations with Ulster’s general manager, Bryn Cunningham, heightened his eagerness to join the prestigious club.
Cunningham highlighted Bell’s potential, noting that he embodies the profile of a player who can make a significant impact on the team. He emphasized that Bell’s arrival aligns with Ulster’s ongoing efforts to enhance squad competitiveness under coach Richie Murphy, especially following a challenging season where they missed out on the United Rugby Championship play-offs and qualification for the forthcoming Investec Champions Cup.
The addition of Bell follows a trend of southern-hemisphere players joining Irish provinces on temporary agreements. For instance, New Zealand international Jordie Barrett is concluding his time with Leinster, and his All Blacks teammate Rieko Ioane is expected to join further down the line.
Ulster’s proactive recruitment strategy includes signing South African back row Juarno Augustus from Northampton Saints, further paving the way for a revamped squad that hopes to reignite competitive success in the coming seasons.
With Bell’s experience and skill set, Ulster fans can remain optimistic about the positive changes ahead, paving the way for a brighter overall performance as they move forward into future campaigns.
