Four years ago, Russia initiated an unlawful and unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a conflict that has had significant repercussions worldwide. Even nations in the Pacific have felt the impact, with rising wheat and fuel prices being directly linked to the ongoing war. As the conflict warps into its fourth year, much of the fighting remains distant for those in the Pacific, primarily observable through the lens of news broadcasts. Nevertheless, Barbara Plinkert, the Ambassador of the European Union to the Pacific, emphasizes the continued importance of solidarity in the face of this persistent war.
In her reflections, Plinkert argues that Russia’s actions represent a flagrant disregard for fundamental principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for the established rules-based international order. The European Union, which emerged from the ruins of World War II to counter a world where the strong overpower the weak, recognizes that the invasion of Ukraine is a stark reminder of the necessity of upholding international law, particularly in safeguarding the rights of smaller nations.
Plinkert asserts that the war is not an isolated issue and the repercussions of Russia’s aggression extend well beyond Europe, impacting global food security and energy supplies and exacerbating humanitarian crises. The Pacific region, already grappling with climate risks and economic volatility, needs to maintain a focus on universal norms and accountabilities, despite the disruptions that the invasion has caused. Attention cannot be diverted from these shared challenges.
Highlighting Ukraine’s extraordinary resilience and determination in defending its sovereignty, Plinkert points out that despite the EU’s unwavering support – encompassing political, economic, military, and diplomatic avenues – true hope for peace lies in a resolution that respects sovereignty, territorial integrity, and international law.
Values aligned with peace and sovereignty, fundamental to both Ukraine and the Pacific nations, formed the foundation for the Blue Pacific Ocean of Peace Declaration made during the 54th Pacific Islands Forum. This reflects a collective commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue rather than force. The EU and the Pacific together acknowledge that a lasting peace in Ukraine must be both credible and constructive.
Plinkert firmly states that the EU will remain resolute in its support for Ukraine while promoting accountability and rejecting any violation of international law. Upholding the rules-based order is a just cause that extends beyond Europe, reinforcing peace in the Pacific and globally. She underscores that peace cannot be sustained in an environment where aggression is condoned.
As February 24 approaches, marking another year of conflict, the EU urges all partners to reinforce their solidarity with Ukraine. The commitment to support Ukraine as long as necessary is steadfast, and appreciation is extended to the Pacific partners for their unwavering backing. Together, it is vital to reject Russia’s destabilizing actions and advocate for a peaceful future for Ukraine and the world at large.
