The Fijian government is taking decisive steps to enhance access to clean drinking water for the residents of Udu district in Macuata Province. Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Sakiusa Tubuna, recently acknowledged that many villagers grapple with the challenge of securing safe drinking water on a daily basis. During his visit to the district on Friday, Tubuna expressed his determination to improve the situation through collaboration with the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF).

Many villagers currently depend on boreholes for their water supply, a solution which is not sustainable for the long term. Tubuna emphasized the need for a more permanent solution, highlighting the existence of natural spring water sources that could be harnessed to ensure reliable access. He visited several villages, including Nukudamu, Vunikodi, and Nabuono, where residents have raised numerous concerns regarding the water infrastructure’s inadequacy.

The government is exploring the construction of a large catchment plant in Udu, aimed at serving these communities as well as a local school. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to enhance infrastructure in the Northern Division, as exemplified by a recent allocation of $900,000 for clean drinking water projects in nearby Niurua and Naqumu villages. This financial commitment underlines the government’s ongoing focus on improving living conditions for rural populations, particularly by addressing essential services such as water supply.

Transport challenges also impact these communities, with boat travel being the primary means of movement due to the district’s extensive landscape. Tubuna mentioned that the government could assist villagers with purchasing a new boat engine, indicating a collaborative effort where the government would cover two-thirds of the cost, while the villagers would need to raise the remaining third.

The emphasis on clean drinking water and improved infrastructure illustrates the government’s commitment to the health and well-being of its citizens. With proactive measures and community involvement, there is a hopeful outlook for better living conditions and quality of life for the residents of Udu district.
