The investigation into the tragic death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider will soon be made public, according to Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru. This announcement was made during a session in Parliament, where he responded to inquiries from Opposition MP Prem Chand. Chand raised concerns about whether the Boxing Commission of Fiji had adequately ensured that boxers were insured for the program held on October 26 in Nadi.
Minister Saukuru informed Parliament that the three-member Board of Inquiry tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding Haider’s death has not yet completed their investigation, primarily due to outstanding interviews that need to be conducted with individuals from overseas. He assured that a ministerial statement on the matter will be issued at an appropriate time, and emphasized the importance of respecting the ongoing inquiry.
He remarked on the significance of Haider’s contributions to Fiji and expressed the necessity to fully understand the details of the incident before drawing conclusions. Saukuru refrained from providing additional information until the investigation is concluded.
This situation highlights the need for transparency and accountability in sports, particularly regarding athlete safety. As the investigation progresses, there is hope that the findings will lead to improved standards for boxer safety and insurance in the future, preventing similar tragedies from occurring and honoring the legacy of athletes like Ubayd Haider.
