Two tragic road accidents this week have claimed the lives of two teenagers, leading police to issue urgent warnings to both motorists and pedestrians about the dangers associated with reckless driving and roadside hazards.

In the first incident, an 18-year-old student lost his life early Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle while sleeping on the side of the road in Nadi. Police reported that the young man was intoxicated at the time of the accident, which involved a vehicle driven by a 43-year-old man. The victim was swiftly transported to Nadi Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic Control, emphasized the risks posed by alcohol consumption, urging young individuals to exercise caution and refrain from walking along busy roads while under the influence. “When you are intoxicated, please avoid walking along a busy road, you will only put yourself and other road users at risk,” he warned. The driver involved in this incident is currently in police custody as investigations are ongoing.

In a separate but equally devastating event, a 15-year-old student died when a vehicle carrying him and seven others lost control on Nausori Highland Rd last Thursday. The vehicle careened off the road, falling about 100 meters down a cliff, resulting in the ejection of all occupants. The teenager was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Nadi Hospital, while three other students who were also injured are reported to be in stable condition.

These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the critical importance of road safety, particularly for young people who may be more vulnerable to risky behaviors. As authorities continue their investigations, the hope is that increased awareness will prevent future tragedies on the roads.
