Two men charged with drug-related offenses did not appear in the Magistrates Court today following their arrest at a Public Rental Board property on Mead Road in Suva last year. One of the defendants, Mikaele Kolikeinakorotubu, was absent from the proceedings, prompting the court to issue a bench warrant for his arrest.
The second defendant, Laisiasa Bavai, who remains in custody, also failed to attend the hearing in person. His production order has been extended, and he is now scheduled to appear in court on March 4.
The arrests occurred after a raid by the Southern Division Police at a housing unit in Nabua. It is alleged that during the operation, the two men attempted to dispose of a bag by throwing it into nearby bushes. Authorities recovered a black sling bag containing three zip-lock packets filled with a white crystal-like substance suspected to be methamphetamine, as well as assorted cash amounting to $5,560, which police believe may be linked to drug sales.
Both men face serious charges, including unlawful possession of illicit drugs and resisting arrest, with the case set to be revisited next month. The ongoing legal proceedings highlight the efforts of law enforcement to tackle drug offenses in the region, reflecting a commitment to maintaining community safety.
