Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has emphasized the strong ties between Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG), describing their relationship as “mates, equals and allies.” His remarks came during the Leaders’ Summit at the PNG Investment Week, where he underscored the significance of their growing economic partnership.
Albanese articulated that PNG and Australia are akin to “two houses with one fence,” signifying their interconnectedness and mutual benefit from a peaceful, stable, and prosperous neighborhood. The Prime Minister highlighted the camaraderie between the leaders and their respective governments, stating that this collaboration reflects progress that serves both nations’ interests.
He reminisced about significant milestones shared between the two leaders, including visits to each other’s parliaments, commemorating Anzac Day at Isurava, and trekking the historic Kokoda Track together. “We are, of course, the nearest of neighbours… and with the signing of the Pukpuk Treaty, we are allies too,” Albanese remarked, reinforcing the idea that their relationship is built on deep historical ties.
Albanese encouraged potential investors to support the summit’s goal of “building a Pacific region that protects sovereignty, strengthens democracy, and expands prosperity.” He also welcomed the announcement that Qantas will initiate direct flights between Sydney and Port Moresby in March 2026, enhancing tourism, business travel, and family ties.
In concluding his speech, he stressed the importance of fostering relationships at the individual level, asserting, “At the end of the day, business-to-business relations are important, government-to-government relations are important but nothing beats people-to-people.” This sentiment underscores the foundational role that personal connections play in strengthening diplomatic and economic ties in the Pacific region.
