This past weekend’s Singapore 7s proved to be a momentous occasion for young Fijians both at home and abroad, as history was made in the world of rugby commentary. While the top rugby sevens talent showcased their skills on the field, two Fijian commentators, Satish Narain and Sera Naiqama, made their mark on the global stage.

Narain and Naiqama co-commentated Fiji’s pivotal final pool match against South Africa, marking the first time that two Fijians took on such a significant broadcasting role during a series event. Following their pool match, Narain went on to commentate his first series semi-final, featuring South Africa’s 7s team against France.

Reflecting on this historic milestone, Narain expressed his pride in representing Fiji on such a prominent platform. He said, “Two Fijians on the global stage — never been done before. To be the first with Sera and do something like that was like gold.” This achievement not only highlights representation in commentary but also serves as a reminder that Fijians hold a meaningful place in the global rugby community.

Narain took a moment to acknowledge those who paved the way for his opportunities, specifically thanking Karl Te Nana, the associate producer for World Rugby, for facilitating the entry of Fijians into prestigious commentary roles. He shared Te Nana’s encouragement: “Fiji has done a lot in 7s on the world stage. If I can open the doors and bring people into the commentary box who can talk about Fiji better than anyone else, then I’ve done my bit.”

Central to Narain’s message is the hope that his achievement inspires the next generation of Fijian children. He stated, “I hope what Sera and I have done here inspires the young children at home, watching or listening, because that is what we want.” His sentiment resonates throughout the Pacific Islands, where hard work and perseverance are essential for success. He emphasized, “We want our children to dream big. We want them to fight hard. In the Pacific, nothing is given on a silver platter — you must fight hard, and only then will you be recognised.”

For young Fijians, the message is clear: their voices matter, their dreams are valid, and through dedication and effort, they can make the global stage their own. This landmark moment not only marks a victory for Narain and Naiqama but also instills hope and ambition in the hearts of the next generation of Fijian talent.
