Two individuals are facing charges brought by the Fiji Police Cybercrime Task Force for allegedly engaging in separate deceptive schemes to obtain financial advantage.

In the first case, a 37-year-old man is accused of scamming a victim out of $397 on January 24, 2025. The suspect allegedly utilized a messaging platform to inform the victim that a package had been sent from overseas, requesting $400 for its clearance. After transferring the amount, the victim realized the transaction was fraudulent when the suspect stopped responding. The man faces one count of obtaining financial advantage by deception.

In a separate incident, a 21-year-old woman allegedly secured $710 from a victim in August 2024 through a fake Facebook account. The suspect purportedly advertised a phone for sale, engaging the victim in multiple exchanges on Messenger before the funds were transferred. The transaction turned out to be a scam as no confirmation or product was received, leading the victim to report the incident. The accused has also been charged with one count of obtaining financial advantage.

Both individuals are set to appear in a special sitting at the Labasa Magistrates Court today.

This pattern of fraudulent activities highlights an ongoing issue of online scams prevalent in Fiji, often involving deception through digital platforms. Previous reports have shown similar tactics where victims are lulled into a false sense of security through convincing communications and fraudulent advertisements. The recurrent nature of these incidents underscores the importance of raising public awareness about online fraud prevention. Continued diligence and effective police initiatives are key to mitigating such crimes and providing protection against illicit financial schemes.

The efforts by law enforcement to address these issues serve not only to bring justice but also to encourage increased vigilance among the public when conducting online transactions.
