For over twenty years, Marisio Qiolele has dedicated his nights to baking at Hot Bread Kitchen in Pacific Harbour, providing fresh bread that is a staple for many in the community each morning. His journey in the baking industry started with minimal knowledge yet a strong desire to learn, which has helped him rise to the position of Head Baker.

Reflecting on his early experiences, Qiolele recalls how challenging his initial days were. In his first week, he found himself completing his shift alone after his coworkers left him to finish the bread. Despite the pressure, he succeeded, a pivotal moment that built his confidence and laid the groundwork for a lasting career in baking.

Baking at Hot Bread Kitchen involves long hours and often overnight shifts, with the ovens reaching temperatures of up to 300 degrees. Qiolele acknowledges the physical demands of the job, exemplified by his typical work routine that can extend into the early hours of the morning. “Yesterday I worked the whole day, then overnight, and knocked off at six this morning,” he explained.

Since joining the company in the early 2000s, Qiolele has emphasized the importance of teamwork and mentorship in his growth as a baker. Veteran bakers share their expertise with newcomers, fostering a supportive environment that enhances skill development. “Everything is taught to us,” he noted, highlighting the collaborative spirit that characterizes the bakery.

Managing Director Vanessa Charters reinforced this commitment to employee growth, stating that Hot Bread Kitchen is dedicated to creating career pathways for individuals who may not have experienced strong academic opportunities. “We provide careers, trainings and skills for people who may not have done well in schools, so they are able to have careers that lead them to save money, buy homes, build assets and raise their children,” she said.

Qiolele’s journey from a novice baker to a guiding force for others in the bakery underscores the significance of workplace training, dedication, and resilience. After two decades of service, he remains committed to delivering freshly baked goods, ensuring the community starts each day on a positive note. His story serves as an inspiring example of how hard work and support can pave the way for success.
