A new phase of community development is taking shape in Lekanai Village on Gau Island, where local villagers have initiated two cooperatives aimed at enhancing livelihoods and promoting sustainable growth.

In a significant step forward, the women of Lekanai have established the Miramira ni Savura Lele Women’s Cooperative, which comprises 24 members. This group has leveraged years of experience in traditional mat weaving to expand into layer chicken farming, supported by government initiatives. Chairperson Tirisa Maibau expresses that the official registration of the cooperative has motivated its members to aspire for greater achievements. The cooperative aims to scale its poultry operations to around 200 birds, striving to become a key supplier of eggs throughout Gau.

On the other hand, the men of Lekanai have taken the initiative to form the Vatuvula Cooperative, which focuses on improving access to essential goods within the village. Their initial plan involves establishing a local shop, aimed at reducing the need for villagers to frequently travel outside the community for daily necessities.

Collectively, these two initiatives epitomize the determination of Lekanai’s residents to fortify their local economy and construct a more resilient future for their community. The launch of these cooperatives highlights the potential for collaboration and innovation among villagers as they work toward a thriving and self-sufficient community.
