TWC Launches Fiji Seedling Pilot in Vanua Levu to Boost Citrus Farming

The Wonderful Company (TWC), the parent organization of FIJI Water, has achieved a significant milestone in its agricultural development efforts in Fiji, marked by the recent arrival of seedlings to Waiqele, Vanua Levu. This initiative is part of a pilot project aimed at cultivating Persian limes, Mexican limes, lemons, and papayas, demonstrating TWC’s long-term investment strategy for Fiji’s agriculture sector.

Last year, TWC’s agronomists conducted extensive surveys across various regions of Fiji and deemed Vanua Levu as ideal for the cultivation of high-quality citrus, mangoes, and papayas, attributing this to the region’s suitable climate, soil, and available land. With over two years of planning coming to fruition, TWC reported that more than 7,000 seedlings from California are set to be nurtured in the newly constructed greenhouse facility in Waiqele. To date, over 3,500 seedlings have already arrived, with the remaining expected by the end of December. A greenhouse engineer from China was also brought in to assist in establishing robust infrastructure, ensuring that the young plants receive optimal care during their critical early stages.

In conjunction with these efforts, TWC has appointed a Farm Manager from Vanua Levu, who will collaborate with the National Agriculture Pte Ltd (NAPL) team to implement sustainable growing practices. This role is vital in fostering partnerships with local communities and government agencies, enhancing agricultural practices throughout the region.

Drawing on decades of experience in cultivating citrus, almonds, pistachios, and pomegranates globally, TWC is not only bringing its agricultural expertise to Fiji but also building relationships with local farmers. The initiative is expected to stimulate economic activity in Vanua Levu. Additionally, TWC has organized beekeeping workshops and provided hands-on training to local farmers, aligning with the government’s aims to boost agricultural skills across the nation.

The project promises to reduce Fiji’s reliance on imported fruits, thereby fortifying food security and creating economic opportunities for communities in Vanua Levu. By facilitating market access for local farmers, consumers will enjoy increased availability of fresh, locally produced fruits. This venture signifies both immediate economic advantages and a steadfast commitment to sustainable agriculture and the development of local capacities.
