Tuwai’s Heartfelt Apology: A Silver Lining for Fiji’s Future Stars

Jerry Tuwai, a three-time Olympic gold and silver medallist, delivered an emotional speech upon arriving at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi yesterday. Following the team’s remarkable showing at the Paris Olympics, where they earned a silver medal, Tuwai expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the guidance and protection he received during their preparations.

“I would like to thank the almighty for the protection and guidance in the past months leading to the campaign in Paris and for bringing us safely back home,” Tuwai stated. He also extended his appreciation to the coaches, managers, and teammates for their efforts in representing Fiji on such a prestigious global stage, as well as to their families for their unwavering support.

Tuwai took a moment to apologize to the nation for not meeting expectations, saying, “We apologize for coming back with a wrong color of medal. We recognize the hopes placed upon us and regret that we could not defend the gold medal in Paris.”

Despite falling short of their goals, Tuwai voiced his hope that their experience would motivate young athletes and future representatives of Fiji to aim for excellence. He highlighted the significance of team unity in achieving success for their country.

“While we didn’t reach our goals, we pray that our performance serves as an encouragement for young players and those who will represent our nation in the future,” he remarked. Tuwai described their Olympic journey as valuable, filled with encounters with legendary players and new experiences.

He concluded by expressing that with unity, love, and togetherness, Fiji can achieve great things in the future.
