Iosefo Tuvere dug deep to win gold in the intermediate boys 800 metres at the Coca‑Cola Games Triple N Zone athletics meet held recently at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Representing Nakasi High School, Tuvere surged in the final lap after spotting a teammate falter, a moment he says galvanized him to defend his school’s 800m title.
“It was when I saw my friend touching his knee and slowing down in the last lap that I told myself I have to win this race so our school can defend the title,” Tuvere said after the race. The Nakasi High runner said the victory was the payoff for weeks of hard preparation and steady belief. “During my preparation, I always had strong faith that I would win this event,” he added.
Tuvere dedicated the win to his family, thanking his mother for “endless support” and honouring his late father. The emotional dedication underlined how much the result means to the 800m specialist as he aims to build on this zonal success.
The Triple N Zone meet is one of the preliminary competitions feeding into the national Coca‑Cola Games finals, and Tuvere said the focus now shifts to improving his time and overall speed ahead of the Fiji finals. “This is not the end. Once we return to school, I will strengthen my training techniques so I can perform even better at this year’s Fiji Finals,” he said.
Coaches and teammates at Nakasi High will be looking to Tuvere’s performance as a sign the school can be competitive at the national level in middle-distance events. While Tuvere did not disclose his finishing time, his tactical acceleration in the closing stages — triggered by concern for a struggling teammate — was decisive in securing the gold.
The Triple N Zone results mark the latest movement in the build-up to the Coca‑Cola Games, the country’s premier secondary school track and field championships. With zonal titles now being decided, athletes like Tuvere will use the remaining weeks to refine technique, increase speed and target personal bests ahead of the national meet.
