Suvavou villagers are filled with joy and excitement as they set the stage for the annual Tui Suva Volleyball Games at the Suvavou grounds today. Now in its 32nd year, this beloved tournament, known as the Tui Suva Trophy, features a vibrant mix of competition with 12 men’s teams, eight women’s teams, seven junior teams, and seven sub-junior teams all ready to showcase their skills.

Tailasa Taka, one of the tournament representatives, underscores the significance of involving youth in such events as a productive response to the social challenges they face. Taka believes that the games provide an essential platform for the community to bond and enjoy time together, especially as they enter the New Year.

“It’s a day where everyone can come together, enjoy the games, and create lasting memories,” he remarked. The tournament not only welcomes local participants but also invites neighboring villages to partake in the festivities, which highlight the essence of sportsmanship and community spirit.

Acknowledging that New Year’s Eve often leads to partying and drinking, Taka emphasizes that the event serves as a constructive alternative for the village youth, promoting camaraderie and healthy competition. The tournament has thrived over the years, witnessing an increase in team participation and showcasing local volleyball talent.

A unique aspect of the event is the tradition where youths come together in the morning to clean graves, followed by an engaging day of competition and a festive lunch with family. As school holidays near their end, the tournament also encourages participation from children in both the Junior and Sub-Junior categories, fostering early involvement in the sport.

Looking forward, Taka shared exciting plans to enhance the existing volleyball courts, aiming to further develop the sport within the Suvavou region. Organizers have expressed gratitude to participating teams and warmly invite all families to join in and celebrate a day filled with joy and camaraderie.

With the anticipation of a successful tournament unfolding, the community is hopeful for a prosperous and enriching year ahead in 2026.
