Tui Nadi Resigns as People’s Alliance Party President: What’s Next?

Ratu Vuniyani Navuniuci, the Tui Nadi, has stepped down as president of the People’s Alliance party. He made this announcement yesterday, revealing that he submitted his resignation during the party’s executive council meeting last week.

At 70 years old, Ratu Vuniyani cited two primary reasons for his decision to resign. He stated, “First, I have achieved what I had committed to in the formation of the party,” referring specifically to the successful effort to defeat the FijiFirst party, which he considers a significant accomplishment during his leadership.

Additionally, Ratu Vuniyani expressed a desire to prioritize his health and personal life. He noted, “I don’t want to take both the pressure of these two leaderships of being president and chief-ly role of Nadi.” He has opted to focus solely on his responsibilities as Tui Nadi and believes this is the appropriate moment for someone else to step in and lead the party forward. Ratu Vuniyani also denied any rumors suggesting he disagreed with certain procedures, calling them misinformation.

He expressed gratitude to the party, its members, and his supporters. Following his resignation, vice-president Ratu Josefa Dimuri will serve as the acting president.
