Tsunami Watch for Fiji Following Powerful Quake: What You Need to Know

Fiji was placed on a tsunami watch following a significant 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Vanuatu yesterday afternoon. The earthquake, recorded at a depth of 46 kilometers, occurred roughly 14 kilometers northwest of Port Vila.

The seismology department of Fiji’s Mineral Resources Department (MRD) issued an update indicating the potential for hazardous tsunami waves. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also issued a tsunami watch via its US Tsunami Warning System, warning that waves of less than 0.3 meters were expected along the coasts of multiple Pacific nations including Fiji, Kiribati, and New Caledonia.

In response to the situation, the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) advised the public to remain alert and to avoid unnecessary coastal travel until further information was released. Fortunately, the tsunami watch was later rescinded, easing concerns for the affected regions.

Adding to the seismic activity, the Fiji seismology department noted that 20 earthquakes had been recorded in the Northern Division within the past 24 hours. The MRD explained that Fiji’s positioning along the Pacific Ring of Fire, situated between two significant subduction zones—the Tonga Trench and the New Hebrides Trench—and its proximity to major fracture zones, frequently exposes the region to earthquakes.

In a positive light, the prompt response from authorities and the cancellation of the tsunami watch demonstrate the efficacy of preparedness and communication in minimizing risk and ensuring public safety during seismic events.

Overall, the situation highlights the importance of remaining vigilant and prepared in earthquake-prone areas, especially in regions like Fiji that are susceptible to such natural occurrences.
