Trust in Policing: Commissioner Tudravu’s Promise to Restore Confidence

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has committed to investigating any allegations of police inaction thoroughly through the Internal Affairs Division. His remarks come amid rising public concerns regarding police handling of investigations and reports.

Tudravu acknowledged a decrease in serious crimes such as burglary, rape, robbery, and defilement; however, he recognized that skepticism persists among the community. “While the statistics are promising, I understand that some groups will question their validity due to the narratives circulating in the media and on social platforms,” he stated. He urged the public to report incidents to facilitate proper investigations and to assure them that all claims of inaction will be addressed.

“I encourage the lodging of reports to enable investigations. I want to assure the community that every report will be taken seriously, and claims of inaction will be looked into by our Internal Affairs division. We are determined to restore public trust through effective service delivery,” Tudravu expressed, emphasizing a dedicated effort to rebuild confidence in the police force.

Furthermore, the Commissioner stressed that the police are committed to accountability, reinforcing that every case will be treated with the seriousness it deserves. This commitment reflects a broader initiative to foster better relationships with the community, as seen in earlier initiatives where police leadership focused on improving service responsiveness and uptaking internal reforms.

The proactive steps taken by Commissioner Tudravu signal a hopeful outlook for restoring public trust and confidence in the police. By emphasizing the importance of community involvement in the reporting process and pledging to address allegations of inaction, there is potential for a safer and more trusting environment in Fiji. This commitment sets the stage for stronger interactions between law enforcement and the community, ultimately enhancing public safety and confidence in police operations.
