The prospect of the United States potentially purchasing Greenland is currently being explored by President Donald Trump and his national security team, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. She emphasized that President Trump’s primary approach has consistently been diplomacy, with all options remaining open.
Trump has reiterated his interest in acquiring Greenland, a notion he initially put forth during his first presidency back in 2019. He believes that the strategic significance of the island is vital for U.S. military interests, particularly expressing concern that Denmark has not adequately safeguarded it.
Recent events, including a U.S. military operation that captured the leader of Venezuela, have reignited fears that Greenland could similarly come under threat. Greenland, known as the world’s largest island, has a modest population of approximately 57,000 and is not an independent member of NATO; however, it is protected under Denmark’s alliance with the Western military coalition.
