A planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has been postponed, as recent developments surrounding the conflict in Ukraine have raised significant concerns. A senior White House official confirmed to Reuters that there are currently no arrangements for a meeting between the two leaders in the near future. Despite a recent “productive call” between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, they decided against an in-person meeting. Trump had previously suggested a meeting in Hungary to address the situation in Ukraine, but Putin’s unwillingness to consider concessions, particularly concerning territorial claims in Ukraine, has hindered progress.
In a private communique sent to the U.S. last weekend, Russia reiterated its demands for control over the eastern Donbas region, undermining Trump’s perspective that a ceasefire should be established by freezing frontlines at their current positions. It should be noted that Russia already possesses the entirety of Luhansk province and approximately 75% of neighboring Donetsk.
