President Donald Trump’s administration is exploring the inclusion of Azerbaijan and several Central Asian countries into the Abraham Accords, which aim to deepen ties between these nations and Israel. According to sources familiar with the negotiations, discussions are focused on strengthening existing relationships in areas such as trade and military collaboration.
The Abraham Accords, which were originally established in 2020 and 2021 under Trump’s first term, successfully normalized relations between Israel and four Muslim-majority nations after U.S. mediation. Azerbaijan and the Central Asian states already maintain longstanding connections with Israel, making the potential expansion more symbolic than groundbreaking.
This move reflects Trump’s cautious strategy to engage nations in the region while grappling with ongoing humanitarian crises, most notably the escalating conflict in Gaza. With high civilian casualties reported, the situation complicates diplomatic efforts to bring more Muslim-majority countries into the fold. Saudi Arabia, a key player in the Middle East, has indicated it will not recognize Israel without prior steps towards Palestinian statehood, further complicating these discussions.
In addition, Azerbaijan’s unresolved conflict with Armenia poses a critical precondition for its potential inclusion in the Abraham Accords, signaling the complexities inherent in these negotiations. Despite the challenges, two of the sources noted that an agreement could be reached quite soon.
Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, recently visited Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, where discussions with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev centered on further advancing the Abraham Accords. Azerbaijani officials are also reportedly engaging with other Central Asian nations to gauge interest in a broader accord extension.
While this potential expansion does not alter the original rounds of agreements, the U.S. State Department reaffirmed its commitment to fostering wider participation in the accords.
