Thailand and Cambodia have declared a ceasefire effective Friday, as announced by U.S. President Donald Trump following discussions with both nations’ leaders to contain the escalating violence at their long-standing border. This ceasefire comes after days of intense combat, marking a significant turn in the ongoing conflict that has resulted in tragic loss of life and humanitarian crises.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump revealed that he had communicated with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Premier Hun Manet, emphasizing the unfortunate rekindling of hostilities. Both leaders expressed their commitment to halting the fighting and reverting to the previously-established Peace Accord, with Trump stating, “Both countries are ready for peace and continued trade with the United States.”

The violence between the two countries began again earlier this week, involving artillery and rocket fire along their disputed 817-kilometer border, which has led to at least 20 fatalities and over 260 injuries, as per reports from both nations. The clashes have forced hundreds of thousands to flee their homes along the border.

While Trump’s announcement hailed a cessation of hostilities, Thai Prime Minister Anutin conveyed a more cautious stance during earlier discussions, insisting that Cambodia also take proactive steps to withdrawal troops and resolve landmine issues. Anutin asserted that Thailand is responding defensively to perceived aggression from Cambodia.

Despite recent tumultuous events, Trump has positioned himself as a peacemaker, claiming past successes in mediating conflicts. He had previously stepped in during a similar flare-up earlier in the year, helping to facilitate a temporary cessation of fighting. However, skepticism remains regarding the immediate implementation of the ceasefire, given the historical volatility between the two nations.

The ongoing conflict has strained relations, and both sides have accused each other of aggression. As a humanitarian aspect unfolds with significant displacement, the hope is that diplomatic efforts, led by international encouragement, will foster lasting peace.

In addition, the possibility of trade negotiations was mentioned during discussions, although Thailand’s foreign minister indicated that they would not be pressured by tariffs in light of the conflict. Cambodia’s defense ministry has maintained a strong rhetoric, vowing to remain steadfast against what they describe as aggression from Thailand.

The situation remains fluid, and the international community continues to watch closely as both countries navigate this complex geopolitical landscape, hoping for a peaceful resolution that will allow for stability and cooperation in the future.
