Tropical Fantasy Unveiled: Highlights from Suva’s Hibiscus Carnival

The Hibiscus Carnival of 1992 brought a tropical fantasy theme to Suva City. Excitement filled the air in Suva as the carnival officially began at Albert Park on Saturday, August 15, 1992. The week-long celebration promised a diverse range of events and cultural presentations, showcasing Indian, Fijian, and Polynesian nights, alongside a captivating Chinese dragon dance.

A special Senior Citizens Day was also part of the festivities. The highly anticipated Hibiscus Carnival Fashion Show, themed “Tropical Fantasy,” was a focal point of the event. Anna Sweetman, the organizer of the fashion show, expressed great enthusiasm for the evening, promising attendees an experience filled with surprises and prizes.

“We are presenting a wonderful evening based on our theme, so you won’t want to miss it,” stated Anna Sweetman. The fashion show, sponsored by Air New Zealand, was scheduled to take place at Scandals, Noble House, Bau St, Suva, at 6:30 PM. Tickets were available for $12, which included complimentary savories, raffles, and door prizes.

The event was set to feature dance performances by Ken Janson and The Hearts, and showcased fashion highlights from designers such as Tanya Whiteside, Expozay swimwear, and men’s suits from Rags and Riches. With a mix of glamorous fashion and vibrant entertainment, Sweetman emphasized that the Hibiscus Carnival aimed to provide a memorable celebration of Suva’s rich culture.
