Tropical Fantasy: A Look Back at Suva’s Hibiscus Carnival

The Hibiscus Carnival of 1992 infused Suva City with a lively tropical atmosphere. On August 17, 1992, local media reported on the excitement surrounding the carnival, which officially began the previous Saturday at Albert Park.

The week-long event was poised to feature an exciting lineup of activities and cultural presentations, including themed nights celebrating Indian, Fijian, and Polynesian cultures, along with an impressive Chinese dragon dance. A special day dedicated to senior citizens was also on the agenda.

A highlight of the carnival was the highly anticipated Hibiscus Carnival Fashion Show, themed “Tropical Fantasy.” Anna Sweetman, the fashion show organizer, promised attendees an evening filled with surprises and giveaways. “We are providing you a wonderful evening of tropical fantasy, our theme for this year, so you must be there to see what it’s all about,” she stated. “The night promises to be one full of surprises and prizes.”

The fashion show, sponsored by Air New Zealand, was scheduled to take place at Scandals in Noble House, Bau St, Suva, at 6:30 PM. Tickets were sold for $12, which included complimentary snacks, raffles, and door prizes. The evening also featured dancing led by Ken Janson and The Hearts.

Fashion highlights included tropical outfits from Tanya Whiteside, swimwear by Expozay, and men’s suits from Rags and Riches. With a combination of stunning fashion and vibrant entertainment, Ms. Sweetman indicated that the Hibiscus Carnival was set to be a memorable celebration of Suva’s rich cultural tapestry.
