The Fiji Meteorological Service has reported that Tropical Disturbance TD01F exhibits a low likelihood of developing into a Tropical Cyclone. However, the disturbance is expected to bring strong winds and significant rainfall to Fiji. At midday today, TD01F was located approximately 240 kilometers west of Yasawa-i-rara and 270 kilometers west-northwest of Nadi.
As the disturbance approaches, the country can anticipate heavy rainfall and occasional thunderstorms. The Fiji Met noted that from later today until the system moves away tomorrow, strong northwesterly winds will affect several regions, particularly along the coasts of Sigatoka to Nadi, Lautoka, and beyond to the Mamanuca Islands. Average wind speeds are projected to reach between 37 to 46 km/h, with gusts possibly peaking at 55 km/h.
The prevailing weather conditions raise concerns about localized heavy rainfall, which may result in flash flooding, especially in areas already vulnerable due to saturated ground from previous rains. Rising river levels are also expected across major rivers, further compounding risks for communities in the affected areas.
In summary, while TD01F poses a low risk of intensification into a cyclone, its arrival will nonetheless bring challenging weather conditions. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and prepared for potential flooding and strong winds.
It is hopeful that the community can come together to support one another in facing the weather challenges ahead, ensuring safety and preparedness during this time.
