A weather system known as Topical Disturbance 01F (TD 01F) is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the Fiji Islands through tomorrow, though it currently has a low chance of developing into a Tropical Cyclone. According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, as of midday today, TD 01F was situated approximately 240 km west of Yasawa-i-rara and 270 km west-northwest of Nadi, moving southeast at around 20 km/h.

A heavy rain warning is in effect for the entire Fiji group. Additionally, coastal areas in the western and northern regions of Viti Levu, including Sigatoka, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, and regions such as Ba, Ra, Nadroga/Navosa, Yasawa, Mamanuca groups, Vatulele, Kadavu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and nearby smaller islands, are also under a strong wind warning.

Flood alerts are active for all areas vulnerable to flooding, particularly those next to or downstream of major rivers, while a flash flood warning is in place for low-lying areas susceptible to rapid flooding and small streams across Vanua Levu and the interior and western sections of Viti Levu.

As TD 01F approaches, periods of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms are anticipated. Strong northwest winds will also accompany this weather system until it moves away from the region later tomorrow. Regions with pre-existing saturated ground conditions may experience localized heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of flash flooding downstream of rivers and small streams.

The river levels in major rivers are expected to rise as more rain falls with the approach of this disturbance.

Overall, while the weather conditions may pose challenges and hazards for some regions in Fiji, it’s a reminder of the community’s resilience and ability to adapt to environmental changes. Authorities are on alert, and residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared, highlighting the importance of readiness in the face of natural occurrences.
