Troika Mission to New Caledonia Delayed: What’s Next?

The Pacific Islands Forum Troika-led mission to New Caledonia has been postponed.

In a statement released today, the Forum Secretariat mentioned that they are collaborating with the French State and the New Caledonian Government to ensure that the mission’s objectives and arrangements align with the expectations of all stakeholders involved.

The mission was initially set to report to Forum Leaders during the 53rd PIF Leaders Meeting in Tonga, with the visit expected to occur this week. However, the New Caledonian Government has raised several concerns related to due process and protocol that need to be resolved prior to the Troika’s visit.

To allow more time for these issues to be addressed, the Forum Troika has decided to defer their mission until after the Forum Leaders meeting in Tonga. The situation in New Caledonia will be a topic of discussion during this meeting, which is expected to provide further direction on how to support the region.

The Forum family has reiterated its commitment to assist New Caledonia during this period, including through the planned Troika-led mission at a time agreed upon by all parties. The mission was requested by New Caledonia’s President Louis Mapou to the Forum Leaders, and it received approval from the French State.
