Leanne Cavu’s remarkable journey showcases the power of self-belief and resilience. Overcoming a speech impediment caused by rheumatic heart issues, she embarked on an inspiring academic path that culminated in her graduation from the University of the South Pacific (USP), where she pursued a double major in Law and Sociology.
Facing daunting challenges, including periods of anxiety and depression, Ms. Cavu has labeled her experience as a “triumph over turbulent times.” “Every word I re-learned was a victory through the mention of Jesus,” she reflected, emphasizing her faith as a driving force behind her determination to succeed.
Her health struggles began in her final school year at Suva Grammar School, when she was diagnosed with invasive heart valve syndrome, which severely impacted her speech. Due to deteriorating health, Ms. Cavu missed her high school graduation in 2019 and had to undergo a nine-hour procedure in India. During her recovery, her elder sister became her in-house nurse and teacher, helping her regain her articulation and confidence.
Despite the difficulties she faced, Ms. Cavu set her sights on her dreams, enrolling at USP in 2020 against the advice of her family, who suggested she take a break to recuperate. “I had been through a lot already, what else could go wrong?” she pondered. With unwavering support from her family and friends, she made a promise to graduate when the obstacles behind her were finally cleared.
Looking ahead, Ms. Cavu is eager to contribute to either private or public sectors, embodying hope and resilience. “Life to live,” she expressed, as she encourages others to overcome their adversities by acknowledging that, with faith and commitment, anything is achievable.
