This morning, three distinct earthquakes struck northern Fiji within a little over three hours. The first tremor occurred at 3:37 AM, registering a magnitude of 3.5 at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers, approximately 71 kilometers northwest of Lekutu in Bua.
The second earthquake was recorded at 6:42 AM, measuring 2.6 in magnitude, also at a depth of 5 kilometers, and was located roughly 75 kilometers north-northwest of Naduri in Macuata. Just 20 minutes later, at 7:06 AM, a third tremor was felt, which again measured 2.6 in magnitude and occurred at a similar depth of 5 kilometers, situated about 4 kilometers northwest of Nakavika village in Seaqaqa, Macuata.
Seismology officials have confirmed that although the earthquakes were shallow, their magnitudes were relatively low and did not pose any immediate tsunami threat to the region. Authorities are actively monitoring the seismic activity and have urged the public to stay alert, especially in areas where the shaking may have been felt. Thankfully, no reports of damage or injuries have been reported thus far.
The timely response from seismology officials and the community’s preparedness suggest a resilient approach to managing seismic events in the region.
