Former Fijian rugby star Joeli Veitayaki has sadly passed away at the age of 58. The news of his death was shared by his family on social media, prompting a flood of tributes from the rugby community in Fiji and beyond. His daughter, Talei Veitayaki, expressed the family’s shock at his sudden passing, noting the profound impact he made during his life and his enduring legacy within the local community.
Veitayaki was born on the island of Matuku in Lau and represented Fiji on the national rugby team from 1994 to 2003, achieving 49 caps and scoring 15 points. His illustrious playing career included stints with the Chiefs in 1996 and the Blues in 1999 in Super Rugby, as well as a period with the Irish club Ulster from 2001 to 2003.
The outpouring of condolences for Veitayaki echoes sentiments previously seen with the recent losses of other notable figures in the Fijian rugby community, including Josaia Raisuqe and Ilaitia Tuisese, both of whom left significant marks on the sport and the lives of those around them. Raisuqe’s tragic death at the age of 30 due to an accident in France and Tuisese’s passing are stark reminders of the close-knit nature of the rugby fraternity, underscoring the bonds forged through shared challenges on and off the field.
As the rugby community mourns Veitayaki’s loss, they also come together to honor his memory and celebrate the joy and camaraderie that he brought during his life. Funeral arrangements for Veitayaki are yet to be announced, but his family gathers strength from the support of friends and fans who remember him fondly. His legacy, marked by both his rugby achievements and contributions to his community, will continue to inspire future generations of athletes and fans alike.
