A significant loss has resonated within the Fijian netball community with the tragic passing of Unaisi Rokoura, a revered coach and mentor who drowned last weekend. Alumeci Sachs, the president of the Suva Netball Association, shared heartfelt tributes, describing Rokoura as a figure of “humility, excellence, and heart.” Sachs highlighted that collaborating with Rokoura was a privilege and she was an inspiration to many, particularly local coaches, as they advanced their skills and knowledge in netball.
Sachs recalled how Rokoura maintained a calm and dignified presence as she worked tirelessly to elevate the standard of netball in Fiji. Their professional relationship began when Sachs coached the Nasinu Netball under-21 team and continued through various roles, including Rokoura’s coaching positions with the Fiji Pearls between 1997 and 2006, where she captained the team, and later as head coach. Her achievements included representing Fiji at numerous Pacific Games and Commonwealth Games, showcasing her prowess beyond coaching.
The president of Fiji Netball, RubyAnn Sorovaki, also expressed deep sorrow over Rokoura’s untimely passing, underscoring the mark she left not only as an athlete and coach but also as a beloved mentor and friend. Rokoura’s influence spanned beyond Fiji, as she also coached the Papua New Guinea Pepes, shaping the lives of countless players along her journey.
