Naitasiri’s paramount chief, Turaga na Qaranivalu Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, has passed away at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. His contributions as a member of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) are well recognized, having consistently advocated for his people and participated in three GCC meetings since 2022.

Ratu Inoke held the title of Turaga na Qaranivalu since 1997 and was a notable political figure, having served as Minister for Regional Development and Multi-Ethnic Affairs in Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase’s interim cabinet from 2000 to 2001. His political career was marked by significant events, including his previous conviction for instigating the 2000 mutiny, from which he received a presidential pardon in December 2023.

The province is preparing to observe traditional protocols before further funeral details are announced, reflecting the respect and significance attributed to Ratu Inoke’s leadership and legacy. His passing adds to a period of collective mourning in the community, highlighting the importance of leadership in navigating the intricate challenges faced by the i-Taukei people.

This event resonates with similar recent tributes within the Great Council of Chiefs, where leaders have come together to honor and reflect on those who have significantly impacted their communities. Such gatherings reinforce the bond among the i-Taukei leaders and demonstrate a shared commitment to addressing pressing issues that affect their people, fostering hope for resilience and unity in the face of loss. Updates on both Ratu Inoke’s funeral arrangements and ongoing discussions within the GCC will be shared as they become available.
