Families from Koro in Levuka, Lomaiviti, gathered with great anticipation for the arrival of the MV Captain Inoke, operated by Goundar Shipping Limited. This occasion held special significance not only for the company but particularly for the Ratotodro family, as the vessel is named in honor of their late father, Captain Inoke Ratotodro.
Melaia Ratotodro, Captain Inoke’s eldest daughter, was overcome with emotion as the ship docked at Port Mua-i-Walu, reflecting on her father’s legacy. “Our dad, one of the longest-serving staff members of Goundar Shipping, passed away last October. In his honor, Goundar Shipping named this vessel after him,” she shared. “While we miss him dearly, we are grateful for the gesture from the company,” she added, highlighting her father’s dedication to his work over the past 30 years.
George Goundar, the company’s managing director, expressed heartfelt sentiments about Captain Inoke, describing him as a close friend and an essential part of the company. He recalled how Captain Inoke’s guidance and knowledge were instrumental when he launched Goundar Shipping in 2011. “He played a crucial role, overseeing the deck operations while I focused on engineering,” Goundar said, sharing fond memories of their collaboration.
The MV Captain Inoke will be captained by Sainimere Qutonilaba, a talented 31-year-old who began her journey with Goundar Shipping as a cadet in 2011. She has demonstrated remarkable progression in her career, successfully bringing several new vessels into the fleet. A traditional ceremony welcomed the vessel before guests were invited on board for a tour.
This tribute serves as a reminder of the enduring impact one person can have on their community and the legacy they leave behind. Celebrating both progress and remembrance, the event not only marks the addition of a new vessel to the Goundar fleet but also honors the memory of a dedicated individual whose work will continue to resonate within the company and community.
