The Suva Magistrate’s Court has announced a trial date for former Acting Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service, Salote Panapasa. Panapasa faced Magistrate Krishan Prasad on Thursday, dealing with two charges of abuse of office and an alternative accusation of general dishonesty resulting in a loss.
The allegations state that from August 1 to September 30, 2023, while employed as a civil servant in Suva, Panapasa directed officers to use FCS building materials for her personal residence in Kinoya. Furthermore, between August 1 and October 31, 2023, she reportedly instructed a Corrections officer to modify weekly reports to justify the utilization of these materials at her home.
Initially, both parties were prepared to discuss the agreed facts; however, FICAC lawyer Mary Takinana revealed that, according to Panapasa’s attorney, only two facts were acknowledged: her name and position. The remaining facts put forth by FICAC were contested. Consequently, a trial has been scheduled from June 23 to 27 next year, with her bail conditions continuing.
This situation highlights the importance of accountability and integrity within public service roles. As the legal proceedings unfold, it serves as a reminder of the scrutiny faced by officials and the necessity of upholding ethical standards.
The case will not only draw attention to issues of governance but also potentially lead to reforms aimed at strengthening oversight mechanisms in public service. The forthcoming trial represents an opportunity for Clarity and Justice, which can inspire confidence in institutions and accountability among civil servants.
