Trial Date Set for Controversial Fiji Corruption Case

The trial for former Fisheries and Forestry Minister Kalaveti Ravu is scheduled for February of next year. Ravu faces charges alongside former Regional Manager North, Tekata Toaisi.

Today, Ravu attended a hearing at the Suva Magistrates Court, presided over by Magistrate Jeremaia Savou, to request a bail variation to allow travel to China. Toaisi was not present at the proceedings due to a misunderstanding regarding the hearing date.

The case involves allegations of corrupt practices linked to the FijiFirst Party’s false declarations, specifically targeting the Fiji First Australia Association Incorporated, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Tito Bainimarama.

Additionally, there are complaints against Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Mohammed Saneem regarding collusion and conflicts of interest, along with Arif Ali for allegedly donating $10,000 to the FijiFirst Party while serving as a civil servant.

Further complaints have been filed against the President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Charan Jeath Singh. There is also an accusation against Voreqe Bainimarama for providing false declarations regarding his income, assets, and liabilities from 2014 to 2019 and in 2022.

The fifth case involves a complaint against Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum for failing to declare an overseas travel allowance.

Regarding other matters referred by the Supervisor of Elections, those investigations are still ongoing, and FICAC has announced that it will refrain from commenting until the investigations are concluded. FICAC emphasized that its operations continue normally and that all complaints are handled with the necessary scrutiny, regardless of the individuals involved.
