A retired ship captain with extensive maritime experience has played a vital role in the trial of Tevita Kapawale, facing charges related to the alleged murder of five crew members aboard the FV Tiro II in May 2021. Savenaca Kadavi provided important testimony at the Suva High Court, detailing the design and operational purposes of different areas on the fishing vessel. He emphasized the extreme difficulty, if not impossibility, of surviving for more than two hours locked in the fish hold.

Kadavi’s observations enhance earlier testimonies from other witnesses, including harrowing survival stories from two crew members who experienced the tragedy firsthand. One such survivor, Kaminieli Tucama, recounted how he managed to stay locked in the engine room for approximately 30 hours as he sought safety amid the horrifying events. The combination of expert and survivor accounts underscores the seriousness of the situation and the integrity of the trial process.

The defense intends to use Kadavi’s insights to challenge the prosecution’s narrative, which alleges that Kapawale was linked to the deaths following a violent clash among the crew. According to court documents from the incident that occurred on May 17, 2021, tensions escalated, resulting in the disappearance of five crew members, which included both Fijians and Indonesians.

This trial not only seeks justice for the victims and their families but also emphasizes the critical need for enhanced maritime safety protocols to avert similar tragedies in the future. As the proceedings unfold, there is a collective hope for accountability and clarity—key components in rebuilding trust within maritime operations. The courage of survivors and the relentless pursuit of justice resonate profoundly within the Fijian community, reinforcing the significance of effective judicial measures to confront violent actions at sea.
