Tree Trouble: Mass Power Outage Hits Central Division

The Central Division faced a significant power outage yesterday due to a tree that fell on Energy Fiji Ltd.’s (EFL) 132,000-volt transmission line in Waibau. EFL’s chief executive officer, Hasmukh Patel, confirmed that the disruption began around 2:28 PM.

Patel stated that a report indicated someone was cutting a tree when it accidentally collapsed onto the transmission line, leading to the interruption of power supply from the Wailoa Hydro Electric Power Station to the Cunningham Rd Zone Substation in Suva.

Teams were quickly dispatched to remove the fallen tree from the line before it could be re-energized. While efforts were made to restore power to the affected areas through the Kinoya Power Station, Patel noted that it would take some time to fully restore power to the Central Division.

The public has been advised to avoid all power lines. EFL has expressed its apologies for this unexpected power disruption and the resulting inconvenience, which was beyond their control, and they seek the understanding and cooperation of their valued customers.
