The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has reiterated its commitment to its mandate, distancing itself from political controversies. Chairperson Dr. Marcus Brand emphasized that the TRC will concentrate on fulfilling its responsibilities as designated by Parliament and aims to present its findings by January 30, 2027.

In a recent media conference, Dr. Brand stated that the TRC will not entertain instructions or interference, either from within Fiji or abroad. “We serve the Fijian people and not one particular part of the political spectrum,” he stated, underscoring the importance of recognizing the TRC as an entity for the greater public good.

He reached out to all political parties, urging them to refrain from politicizing the Commission’s existence, asserting that it seeks to be accessible to every Fijian, regardless of their political affiliations. Dr. Brand’s focus is on building trust within the community as they navigate the complexities of reconciliation, adhering strictly to their mandate while ensuring compliance with Fiji’s legal framework.

This approach echoes sentiments expressed by Acting Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, who previously described the TRC as a beacon of hope for fostering reconciliation and healing from past injustices. Kamikamica emphasized the necessity of this initiative to confront historical grievances, acknowledging that healing is a communal effort requiring cooperation across all sectors of society.

The upcoming work of the TRC is not only a call for accountability but also a hopeful step towards creating a more inclusive and understanding society in Fiji. Engaging the community actively and encouraging dialogue is seen as crucial in overcoming the skepticism surrounding the process, providing an avenue for victims to share their experiences and ensuring their voices are heard.

The TRC’s independence and integrity are pivotal to the success of its mission, and the collective commitment from all stakeholders promises to enhance the potential for genuine healing and a pathway toward lasting peace in Fiji.
