Traumatic life experiences, mental health issues, and inadequate support are among the primary factors driving young individuals towards homelessness and engaging in sex work, according to Inoke Drauna, director of Aruka Fiji. Speaking at a recent workshop held at Macuata House in Labasa, Drauna emphasized that many youth face significant trauma that ultimately pushes them to the fringes of society.

“Many of them have experienced trauma that eventually led them to the streets,” Drauna noted, highlighting the complex web of challenges faced by these individuals. He underscored that no one consciously chooses a life on the streets. “At some point in their lives, they were no longer being cared for,” he explained, adding that factors such as mental health instability and other social issues exacerbate their plight.

Importantly, Drauna pointed out that many of these youth are not technically homeless. “They still have homes. In Suva, we often refer to them as drifters — they move around with friends rather than staying in one place.” This distinction underscores the nuanced reality of youth experiencing homelessness.

The workshop discussions revealed an urgent need for robust support systems and safety nets aimed specifically at vulnerable young people. “Many of them just need to know that there are people they can talk to, who understand and share similar experiences,” Drauna remarked, stressing the importance of accessible support channels for those who have faced adversity.

Although many participants have endured challenging situations, Drauna emphasized the critical message that support is available and that they are not alone in their struggles. His organization, Aruka Fiji, is dedicated to providing care, guidance, and support for youth affected by these pressing issues, fostering hope for a better future among those impacted.

It is vital that communities recognize and respond to the challenges faced by these young individuals, reinforcing the message that support and understanding can make a significant difference in their lives.
