Transportation Troubles: MoE Faces Over 10,000 Complaints in 2024

The Ministry of Education (MoE) received over 10,000 complaints regarding transportation in 2024, accounting for more than a third of all reported issues nationwide, as disclosed in Parliament documents. This information emerged in response to a question from Opposition MP Hem Chand directed at Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro.

The Lautoka/Nadi/Yasawa district topped the list with 10,265 transportation complaints, starkly contrasting with the mere 27 classroom-related concerns recorded across the country. The MoE received a total of 28,991 complaints this year, with the ‘Any Other Complaints’ category dominating with 12,154 reports. Issues with teacher availability drew 196 complaints, while matters related to students numbered 381.

In addressing these concerns, the Ministry has launched a four-point improvement strategy that focuses on streamlining documentation processes, establishing a five-day maximum response time for complaints, enhancing central monitoring, and improving accountability measures. Monthly summary reports will be issued to MoE headquarters to track complaint trends and assist in resolving recurrent issues more effectively.

The current situation echoes ongoing discussions around educational access and the importance of reliable transportation, especially in remote areas. Similar themes were reflected in other articles focusing on transportation challenges faced by students at Natusara Primary School in Kadavu, where complaints arose about service interruptions and the adequacy of government payments to transport providers.

The proactive measures taken by the MoE bring a hopeful outlook for future improvements in the transportation system, which is vital in ensuring that students have consistent access to their education. By committing to transparency and engaging with local communities, the Ministry aims to foster an educational environment that supports learning opportunities for all students.
