Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has instructed the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to redirect its enforcement efforts from focusing on bus passengers to tackling more serious issues, including drunk driving and speeding. This change in priority follows public backlash against LTA officers who fined a 60-year-old woman $150 for failing to carry her bus card, an incident that gained viral attention.
In light of these concerns, LTA chief executive officer Irimaia Rokosawa acknowledged the criticism and stated that the LTA is actively collaborating with its service provider and other relevant stakeholders to enhance the e-ticketing system, which has recently come under scrutiny.
Rokosawa emphasized the authority’s commitment to expanding the availability of recharge and top-up options for the e-ticketing system in both urban and rural settings. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to work with the vendor to ensure more top-up locations and better technical support to mitigate any disruptions users may face.
Additionally, the LTA is conducting a thorough review of the public feedback to improve the system’s overall functionality. This review includes ensuring compliance with the Electronic Fare Ticketing (Omnibus) Regulations 2017, particularly concerning fare payments and the verification of bus cards.
Rokosawa assured that the authority takes public grievances seriously and is dedicated to enhancing the e-ticketing experience for all passengers while ensuring public transport services are accessible, transparent, and user-friendly for all Fijians.
