A significant gathering took place late last month at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort in Denarau, where the Fiji National University (FNU) hosted the National Training and Productivity Centre (NTPC) 2025 Fiji Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) conference. This event brought together various stakeholders including representatives from the Nadi Town Council, Fiji Agro Marketing, and Parliament to discuss vital health and safety initiatives.

The conference was marked by the theme, “Revolutionising Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalisation at Work,” as expressed by Dr. Isimeli Tagicakiverata, the university’s Pro-Vice Chancellor for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). He highlighted the importance of this platform in bridging the gap between aspiration and implementation in workplace safety. Dr. Tagicakiverata noted that the conference fosters collaboration among government, academia, and the private sector, underscoring the belief that good safety practices enhance business productivity.

The discussions aimed to explore the integration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence in enhancing occupational safety standards, with an emphasis on equipping participants with the knowledge necessary to implement innovative safety strategies effectively. Participants also engaged in sharing best practices and building alliances, ensuring a comprehensive approach to improving health and safety conditions across various sectors.

This conference comes on the heels of FNU’s ongoing educational initiatives that promote better working conditions and preparation for future challenges. As various stakeholders commit to workplace safety and the use of technology, the discussions in Nadi hold promise for the continuous improvement of Fiji’s occupational health landscape.

Overall, the FNU’s commitment to fostering collaboration and embracing technological advancements in health and safety creates a hopeful path towards safer workplaces in Fiji, highlighting the potential for innovation and improved wellbeing within the workforce.
