As we step into 2025, the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) is urging for collective action to build upon the achievements made in 2024 and to address the obstacles that impede sustainable waste management. Amitesh Deo, the founder of PRF, emphasized that despite the significant progress made in addressing waste management challenges in Fiji, there remains a long road ahead.
Deo stated that 2025 should be a transformative year, marked by united efforts across various sectors. He expressed optimism, urging stakeholders to break down existing barriers and strive for lasting change. “The accomplishments of 2024 were important steps forward, but now is the time to turn these milestones into sustainable, scalable solutions that include every community,” he stressed.
In 2024, PRF made significant strides, including the establishment of the Pacific Recyclers Alliance, which promotes regional collaboration to tackle common waste management issues. They also enhanced the visibility of informal recyclables collectors and expanded recycling initiatives into Fiji’s outer islands. Notably, a soft plastics recycling project was launched, and the ‘I Recycle’ program facilitated the transition of collectors to formal employment.
Mr. Deo highlighted that over 20 organizations and communities have adopted the ‘I Recycle’ program, which contributed to diverting approximately 4,837 tonnes of recyclables from landfills in 2024. This effort marks a pivotal shift towards better waste management practices, driven by tailored recycling initiatives.
However, while celebrating these accomplishments, Deo pointed out the need to focus on existing gaps, particularly in underserved areas. He called for the government to implement bold and transformative waste management actions, urging policymakers to prioritize long-term solutions through collaboration with the PRF instead of relying on short-term fixes.
Furthermore, he encouraged businesses to move beyond superficial sustainability measures and to genuinely invest in sustainable practices. He urged that corporate responsibility is crucial for securing a sustainable future for all.
In summary, the PRF is advocating for a united effort in 2025 to transform waste management practices, calling on the government, businesses, and communities to collaborate for impactful and sustainable solutions. The hopeful message underlines the importance of collective responsibility towards a cleaner and greener future, emphasizing that meaningful change requires commitment from all sectors of society.
