A significant multi-million-dollar integrated tourism development project is set to commence on Nasaulevu Island. The project was officially announced following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Nakovacake Development Trust (NDT), the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) regarding the island’s master plan.
Nasaulevu Island spans 747 acres and is located opposite Denarau Port Marina, close to Fantasy Island. Brigadier-General Manoa Gadai, chairman of NDT and Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Joint Task Force, stated during the MOU signing at Navoci Village in Nadi that this initiative marks the beginning of a transformative journey aimed at empowering the island’s residents and future generations.
He added that construction is anticipated to begin in May next year. The development of the revised master plan for the Nasaulevu Integrated Tourism Development Project is expected to take between six to nine months, which includes conducting a feasibility study.
Brigadier-General Gadai explained that negotiations would begin soon on potential joint ventures with FNPF and ADB, and another joint venture MOU would be signed once the options are confirmed. He described this project as a unique tourism development initiative that will stand out not only in Fiji but also in the region.
Cathy Marsh, director general of ADB, noted that the initial allocation for the master plan is $300,000, with plans to launch work on the project before the end of the year. Ro Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Public Works, Meteorology and Transport, expressed the government’s readiness to assist landowners in enhancing their economic engagement.
NDT secretary Anare Naivutevute indicated that the master plan would be distinctive, branding the location as a hub for the South Pacific. He highlighted that the ADB is interested in financing the construction of several facilities, including resorts, commercial lots, residential areas, and a cultural center.
The proposed cultural center aims to attract tourists by offering them an authentic experience of Fijian culture, distinct from what they may have encountered in their home countries.
