A major integrated tourism development project is set to commence at Nasaulevu Island, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the island’s owners, Nakovacake Development Trust (NDT), and the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) along with the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Nasaulevu Island spans 747 acres and is located across from Denarau Port Marina, close to Fantasy Island.
NDT Chairman Brigadier-General Manoa Gadai stated that the MOU signing represents a significant step toward alleviating poverty among the locals and empowering future generations. He emphasized that the MOU signifies a transformative phase for the community, especially with the anticipated large-scale tourism development.
The project is expected to kick off in May, with the provision of a Revised Masterplan for the Nasaulevu Integrated Tourism Development Project anticipated to take six to nine months, including a feasibility study. Brigadier-General Gadai also mentioned that preliminary negotiations for a potential joint venture with FNPF and ADB will begin during the master planning process, leading to another MOU for the joint venture.
This tourism development project is expected to be a distinctive and unparalleled venture within Fiji and the wider region.
Cathy Marsh, ADB’s director-general, noted that the initial budget allocated for the master plan is $300,000, with plans to deploy specialists to initiate development activities before the year’s end.
Ro Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Public Works, Meteorology and Transport, indicated the Government’s readiness to support landowners in enhancing their economic involvement.
NDT Secretary Anare Naivutevute explained that the master plan is poised to be exceptional, aiming to position the area as a hub for the South Pacific.
He added that the ADB is interested in financing the development of various facilities, including resorts, commercial lots, residential lots, and a cultural center.
The cultural center is intended to lure tourists seeking to experience authentic Fijian culture, enhancing their understanding of the local heritage.
