A multi-million-dollar integrated tourism development project is set to commence on Nasaulevu Island. This announcement follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the island’s owners, Nakovacake Development Trust (NDT), the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which outlines a master plan for the island.
Nasaulevu Island spans 747 acres and is located opposite Denarau Port Marina, close to Fantasy Island. NDT chairman Brigadier-General Manoa Gadai, who also serves as the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Commander Joint Task Force (CJTF), commented that the signing of the MOU represents the beginning of efforts to alleviate poverty on the island and empower current and future generations. He described the agreement as a significant step towards a transformative tourism development for Nasaulevu.
The project is anticipated to begin in May, with the preparation of the Revised Masterplan for the Integrated Tourism Development Project taking approximately six to nine months, including a feasibility study. Brigadier-General Gadai mentioned that negotiations will start during this planning phase regarding a proposed joint venture with FNPF and ADB. Following the confirmation of joint venture options, another MOU will be signed to initiate the project.
Cathy Marsh, ADB Director General, stated that the initial budget for the master plan is set at $300,000, and specialists are expected to begin their work before year-end. Minister for Public Works, Meteorology and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, expressed the government’s readiness to support landowners in their economic endeavors.
NDT secretary Anare Naivutevute highlighted that the master plan would be distinctive, aiming to position Nasaulevu as a hub for the South Pacific. He noted ADB’s interest in financing the construction of various facilities, including resorts, commercial and residential lots, as well as a cultural center. This cultural center is designed to attract tourists who wish to immerse themselves in and learn more about Fijian culture.
