When you come across a street performance by a tin band (qiri kava), consider making a small donation. Your contribution could provide essential support for individuals facing hardship, whether it’s helping to feed a hungry person, offering clothing to those in need, or even assisting with educational expenses for young students.
Not all street performances are purely for entertainment purposes. For instance, the Washington Tin Band from Waigasa in Lami is on a mission that goes beyond just spreading joy through music. Since the start of the New Year, this group has been performing across Lami and Suva, aiming to uplift the community while also serving a crucial purpose.
According to band leader Irame Ratulele, the initiative plays a significant role in steering youth, particularly boys, away from the dangers of crime and drug abuse. He noted that many of the band members are students, unemployed, or come from underprivileged backgrounds. On a good day, their performances can generate up to $800 in donations.
“The donations collected are shared wisely,” Ratulele explained. “Ten percent goes to our church, a portion is reserved for our club, and the remaining funds support the band members’ families. We also allocate some of the money for educational needs, including fees and school supplies for our students.”
This band comes from an area in Lami that has faced its fair share of difficulties, yet their presence has been transformative. Ratulele emphasizes the importance of educating the youth: “We encourage our young members to stay away from substance abuse, like glue sniffing and drugs. As senior members, we regret not valuing education in our youth. We’re now dedicated to promoting its significance, inspiring them to pursue better futures through education and employment.”
The Washington Tin Band’s efforts were acknowledged last year when they won the Showcase Tin Band competition in Suva, underscoring their talent and dedication to fostering positive change in their community.
This remarkable initiative serves as a shining example of how music can not only entertain but also empower and uplift the lives of individuals and the community as a whole. With your small donation, you can help continue this noble mission of fostering hope and building a brighter future for the youth in Lami.
