Avesi Kalokalo, the direct care supervisor at Adult & Teen Challenge (Fiji), shares his poignant experiences working with drug addicts, describing it as both heartbreaking and heartwarming. He emphasizes the personal connection he feels when clients open up about their struggles.
Kalokalo finds that witnessing the emotional breakthroughs of individuals, often hardened by their past, is a testament to the positive impact their program has. “It’s satisfying to see these men, from broken families, becoming emotional and vulnerable,” he remarked, noting that moments of breakdown can signal significant progress in their journey towards recovery.
Reverend Hemraj Mangal, the executive director of the center, revealed that they have successfully treated 21 drug addicts through their programs since July of last year. He highlighted an essential aspect of recovery—the individual’s desire to change. According to Mangal, those who genuinely wish to turn their lives around are significantly more likely to succeed in their journey. “If a person is fed up with their old life and truly wants to change, that is the key to our process,” he stated.
This program reflects the transformative power of hope and determination, showcasing how a supportive environment can lead individuals away from addiction. There is growing optimism as those who have overcome their addictions show promising signs of rebuilding their lives, suggesting that with the right support and a sincere willingness to change, recovery is not only possible but attainable.
In an era where addiction remains a pressing issue, the work being done at Adult & Teen Challenge (Fiji) offers a beacon of hope, encouraging others that change is within reach through perseverance and support.
