Dr. Kirsten Finucane, a prominent pediatric heart surgeon and former Head of Pediatric and Congenital Cardiac Surgery at Auckland’s Starship Children’s Hospital, has reported notable advancements in healthcare in Fiji following her recent mission. This mission was her third visit to Fiji, where she led the Hearts4Kids team to perform 15 life-saving surgeries on children suffering from congenital heart disease at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital.
In her reflections on the evolving healthcare landscape, Dr. Finucane expressed optimism about the improvements noted compared to her previous visits. She noted that prior to the establishment of the specialized hospital, conditions were much more challenging as the healthcare facilities were overstretched. “This hospital here, for the last three years, is fantastic. It’s really similar to working at home in New Zealand,” she stated, emphasizing her confidence that the risks to the children during operations are considerably reduced.
Dr. Finucane also highlighted the collaboration between visiting medical teams and local Fijian doctors and nurses, which not only assist in immediate healthcare needs but also contribute to the development of local healthcare capacity. She believes that such partnerships are essential for the sustainability and growth of healthcare in Fiji.
This latest mission aligns with ongoing efforts by various international teams to enhance pediatric cardiac care in Fiji and throughout the Pacific region. In similar initiatives, healthcare professionals from around the world have been coming together to provide essential surgeries and training for local practitioners, ensuring that children with critical health needs receive the care they deserve without the burden of costs.
The efforts at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital shed light on the potential for collaborative healthcare to yield transformative outcomes for children in the region, instilling hope in families who may face insurmountable challenges in accessing necessary medical care. Overall, the progress seen in Fiji serves as an inspiring example of how focused, compassionate, and cooperative healthcare initiatives can significantly advance the health and wellbeing of vulnerable populations.
