The Child Wellbeing Centre is currently providing assistance to 25 boys, as stated by Lynda Tabuya, the Minister of Women, Children and Social Protection. This center collaborates with Inspire Pacific, a non-governmental organization that has established a rehabilitation program in Namosi designed to help boys transition away from street life.

Minister Tabuya outlined the goals of this pilot program, emphasizing the importance of changing the boys’ mindsets through counseling and nurturing healthier social relationships. She noted, “We are addressing the counseling aspect while also helping them find a healthier circle of friends.” This initiative encourages boys to replace their previous social circles with positive influences. Additionally, the program offers opportunities for education and skills training, including farming and vocational activities.

A crucial element of the Child Wellbeing Centre’s mission is reintegration into families. The program also confronts substance abuse issues through partnerships with St Giles Hospital and the Stress Management Board at CWM Hospital. Ms. Tabuya highlighted the urgent need for a dedicated Child Drug Rehabilitation Centre focused on the clinical aspects of detoxification prior to the boys engaging in the rehabilitation process.

Proposals from international drug rehabilitation centers are being collected to support this initiative, which will be presented to the Cabinet following consultations with the Ministry of Health and potential donors. Tabuya acknowledged the increasing drug crisis, noting that law enforcement reports daily arrests related to drug-related offenses. “This indicates a significant presence in the community and a common coping mechanism for stress,” she remarked. However, she reiterated that such coping methods are not healthy and stressed the responsibility of parents and guardians to guide youth toward better solutions.

This initiative reflects a significant commitment to nurturing the wellbeing of young boys and addressing the broader challenges posed by substance abuse in the community. It highlights the combined efforts of governmental and non-governmental bodies working towards positive change, providing hope for improved futures for these young individuals.

In summary, the Child Wellbeing Centre’s program aims to rehabilitate boys from street life through counseling, positive relationships, and vocational training while tackling substance abuse. By integrating support systems and community collaboration, there is a collective effort to foster healthier lifestyles and family reintegration for these boys.
